A knife attack in the eastern French city of Mulhouse has left one civilian dead and seriously injured two police officers, an act President Emmanuel Macron described as an “Islamist terror act.” The incident, which occurred on [date not specified in original], also left three additional officers with minor injuries, according to prosecutors.
The attacker, a 37-year-old man listed on France’s FSPRT terror prevention watchlist, was apprehended following the assault. Nicolas Heitz, a local prosecutor, confirmed the suspect’s status to AFP. The FSPRT database tracks individuals flagged by authorities for potential radicalization risks.
France’s national anti-terrorism prosecution unit (PNAT), now leading the investigation, reported that the suspect targeted municipal police officers while shouting “Allahu Akbar,” an Arabic phrase meaning “God is great,” commonly used by Muslims to express faith. Witnesses corroborated to AFP that the attacker repeated the exclamation multiple times during the assault.
A 69-year-old Portuguese passerby who attempted to intervene was fatally wounded, according to Mulhouse prosecutors. The PNAT highlighted the civilian’s death in its official statement.
President Macron emphasized that the attack was unequivocally “a terrorist act” driven by Islamist motives. He reaffirmed the government’s resolve to “do everything possible to eliminate terrorism within our borders.”
The investigation continues as authorities examine the suspect’s background and motivations, drawing on the FSPRT’s data, which aggregates information to prevent extremist threats.
