According to Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan, Ireland need a system that is both effective and efficient when handling applicants for international protection, reports RTE.
32,000 individuals are now in international protection accommodations, according to Mr. O’Callaghan, who also stated that the “other end of the equation” needed to be examined in order to try to put policies in place that might try to lower the number of applications entering the country.
According to him, the numbers “keep growing” and continuing to receive additional accommodations is untenable, reports RTE.
At a ceremony in Dublin when over 5,000 individuals would receive their Irish citizenship, Mr. O’Callaghan was speaking.
Citizenship will be granted to applicants from more than 130 nations today and tomorrow.
“You’ve got to do a lot more than simply just arrive in here. You’ve got to show your commitment to the State. You’ve got to have a connection here for a considerable period of time. You’ve got, to swear an oath of fidelity and loyalty to the State,” Mr O’Callaghan said, reports RTE.
“I don’t think we make it too easy in this country … you have to do a very active vetting programme in respect of persons who wish to become citizens,” he added, reports RTE.
Additionally, Mr. O’Callaghan stated that those who have been denied international protection need to be deported and should leave the country.
He stated that he anticipates issuing additional orders of similar nature this year, reports RTE.
“No nation can treat its borders or migration with laxity or casualness. In addition to being a rights problem, it’s a security concern,” he stated, reports RTE.
Additionally, he stated that Ireland would not be willing to violate international law by accepting any Gaza refugees.
According to Mr. O’Callaghan, Ireland would not be supporting the recent suggestions that called for the forcible removal of persons from their country of origin, which would be a violation, reports RTE.
