BREAKING: Leo Varadkar has resigned as Taoiseach of Ireland in the Aras and is now in a caretaker role

He’s not smiling anymore, well, that’s if he wanted to continue as Taoiseach.

Fine Gael’s Leo Varadkar has resigned as Taoiseach of Ireland and has handed his resignation into President Michael D Higgins in the Aras.

Varadkar’s resignation came after he, Fianna Fail’s Micheal Martin, Green’s Eamon Ryan and Sinn Fein’s Mary Lou Mcdonald failed to secure 80 votes for them to become Taoiseach.

Coalition talks get underway once again to see whether a grand coalition government can be formed.

Varadkar will remain in the position as a caretaker until a new Taoiseach is elected. He is due to travel to Brussels tomorrow and possibly will still be acting Taoiseach come St Patrick’s Day where he would meet President Trump.
