Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to tender his resignation but will remain in temporary role as Dail fails to elect successor

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said that he will tender his resignation tonight despite the Dáil not electing a successor.

It is understood that Varadkar will remain in place on a temporary basis but will formally hand in his resignation to President Higgins this evening.

It is understood that Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald gained the most votes in the election process with 45, followed by Mícheál Martin 41 with Varadkar receiving 36.

However 85 TD’s opposed McDonald, 96 opposed Martin and further 107 opposed Varadkar to becoming Taoiseach.
