The suspect accused of driving a car into a crowd at Liverpool’s victory parade faces charges of attempted murder, dangerous driving offences, and driving under the influence of drugs, according to RTÉ.
Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims stated, as reported by RTÉ, that the car, a Ford Galaxy, gained access to Water Street after a roadblock was briefly lifted to allow an ambulance crew to attend to a person suffering a heart attack.
She noted, “It is believed the driver of the Ford Galaxy car involved in this incident was able to follow an ambulance onto Water Street after the road block was temporarily lifted so that the ambulance crew could attend to a member of the public who was having a heart attack,” and added, “There was no intelligence to suggest an incident of this nature would take place.”
Detective Chief Superintendent Karen Jaundrill told reporters, according to RTÉ, that the incident on Water Street in the city centre resulted in 65 confirmed casualties. RTÉ reports that 50 people were taken to hospital for treatment, with all appearing to be recovering well. Eleven individuals remain in hospital in stable condition, Ms. Sims confirmed.
