There’s panic in both Cuba and Jamaica tonight after a very powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 magnitude struck between them shortly after 7pm Irish time.
It’s the highest magnitude earthquake either of the islands have ever recorded. A major warnning of the possibility of a tsunami has been issued by the US Tsunami Warning Centre for Jamaica, Cuba and the Cayman Islands.
The quake was 125 kilometers north-northwest of Lucea, Jamaica, and it hit at 2:10pm local time. It’s understood that the epicenter was a relatively shallow 10 kilometers (6 miles) beneath the surface.
It’s not yet known whether there are injuries or damage done directly from the earthquake.
