A major investigation is underway into the death of a man in Dublin city centre yesterday after an alleged shoplifting incident.
Gardaí were called after security staff detained a man on Henry Street in connection with the incident at a shop around 5pm.
A man in his 80s was injured during the event as the suspect tried to escape the scene.
The elderly man was taken to the Mater Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The detained man later became unresponsive at the scene and was also brought to the Mater Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place.
Gardaí said the results of the post-mortem will help determine the next steps in their investigation.
They are appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone with video footage from Henry Street between 5pm and 5.30pm yesterday, to contact Store Street Garda Station on 01 66-68-00, the Garda Confidential Line, or any garda station.
The incident has been referred to Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman.
