Bring it on! Ireland could be set for a very hot heatwave this summer, expert forecasters suggest

Ireland may be in line for a warmer than usual summer, with extended range forecasts pointing to temperatures running above seasonal averages across May and June.

Met Éireann’s extended range outlook shows June temperatures tracking between 0.2 and 1.0 degrees Celsius above the 1991–2020 average, with the warming potential increasing as the month progresses, reports The Mirror.

A high pressure system is expected to dominate between June 16 and 22, potentially pushing temperatures to between 20 and 21 degrees Celsius across many parts of the country — warm by Irish standards, though forecasters caution the conditions are unlikely to meet the technical threshold for a heatwave, which requires several consecutive days above 25 degrees Celsius.

A brief spell of temperatures exceeding 20 degrees across several counties in early June has already been noted as an early indicator of the warming signal, reports The Mirror.

The Met Office has projected 2026 as potentially the hottest year globally on record, a development that would likely push Irish temperatures above recent baselines. However, translating global conditions into Ireland-specific forecasts remains challenging, with regional outcomes depending on high pressure positioning, Atlantic jet stream patterns and local sea surface temperatures.

Forecasters have advised that while a prolonged or extreme heatwave is not anticipated, the pattern points to more frequent temperature spikes above 25 degrees Celsius during the summer months, and local authorities and infrastructure planners have been urged to prepare accordingly, reports The Mirror.
