BREAKING: Man drowns after slipping into river while fishing

A man has tragically drowned after he slipped into a river in Donegal on Wednesday afternoon.

Gardai have confirmed this morning that the man, aged in his 40s, was fishing between the Glenmore and Cloghan areas near Ballybofey when he lost his footing and fell into the river.

The area is well known and is a very popular place for salmon anglers and walkers who like to visit an area known lovely as the Salmon Leap where fish jump from the water.

The man’s brother was with him at the time of the tragedy and raised the alarm shortly after midday. From there, emergency services arrived but sadly the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was taken to Letterkenny Hospital where a post mortem will take place.
