A new May temperature record has been set in Ireland, just a day after the previous one was broken, as a Status Yellow warning remains in place for eight counties.
The latest record was recorded at Shannon Airport, where temperatures hit 30.5°C. This followed an earlier high of 29.7°C at the Oak Park weather station near Carlow town.
Yesterday, Shannon Airport in County Clare reached 28.6°C, surpassing the old May record of 28.4°C set at Ardfert in County Kerry on 31 May 1997.
Met Éireann has warned that daytime temperatures above 27°C and nighttime lows above 15°C are likely in Clare, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Galway, Kilkenny, Laois and Offaly. The warning is in effect until 6pm tomorrow, with nationwide highs expected to range from 22°C to 30°C.
The hot conditions may cause heat stress, make sleeping difficult, and increase water safety risks as more people head to lakes and beaches. Forest fires are also a concern, prompting the Department of Agriculture to issue an orange-level advisory.
