BREAKING: Met Eireann issue heavy snow and ice alert as wind, rain warnings in effect

Snow is already falling in high lying land this evening, with temperatures plummeting right across the country.

A Status Yellow snow and ice warning has been issued, adding to the existing Status Yellow wind and rain alerts already in place.

Met Éireann said some showers could fall as sleet or snow, with minor accumulations possible, particularly on higher ground, reports RTE.

The warning mostly applies to Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, and Wicklow from 10pm this evening until 9am tomorrow.

Motorists are being cautioned that driving conditions could be difficult, as Status Yellow wind and rain warnings remain active across the country, reports RTE.

Met Éireann said strong, gusty southwesterly winds may cause hazardous travel, with the potential for debris, loose objects, or fallen branches and trees on roads.

The wind warning is scheduled to remain in effect until 6pm, reports RTE.

Irish Ferries confirmed that some sailings between Dublin and Holyhead have been cancelled, including the 7.30am departure from Dublin and the 1.15pm sailing from Holyhead.

Dublin Airport said the strong winds this morning disrupted flight operations, with eight inbound aircraft forced to perform “go-arounds” and three flights diverted to alternate airports, reports RTE.

In a post on X, the airport warned that wind conditions are expected to remain challenging for the rest of the morning, and further disruptions are possible.

Passengers were advised to contact their airline directly for the latest updates on flight statuses, reports RTE.

A spokesperson for Shannon Airport said it had handled diversions from Cork and Dublin airports, arranging coaches to transfer passengers to their original destinations.

Separately, a Yellow rain warning is in effect for 21 counties until 3pm today, reports RTE.

This alert covers Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Clare, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Dublin, Kildare, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wicklow, and all of Connacht.

Met Éireann said heavy rain could lead to localised flooding, reduced visibility, and difficult travel conditions, reports RTE.

It said the strongest winds would be along Atlantic coasts, with intermittent heavy rain and the possibility of spot flooding.

The UK Met Office issued a Yellow wind warning for Antrim, Armagh, Derry, Down, Fermanagh, and Tyrone.

It warned that strong winds combined with heavy rain could create challenging driving conditions from 6am to midday, with heavy rain and localised flooding possible, reports RTE.
