Met Éireann has cautioned that temperatures may fall to lows of -3C tonight as a Status Yellow low temperature alert has been issued for ten counties.
The advisory will apply from 11pm tonight until 8am tomorrow for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wicklow and Tipperary, reports RTE.
The national forecaster said widespread frost is expected along with some icy patches, with minimum air temperatures reaching -3 Celsius, and potentially even lower in certain locations.
It added that the sharp drop in temperatures could create dangerous travel conditions and raise concerns for animal welfare, reports RTE.
A Yellow alert for snow and ice affecting Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry expired at midday.
The UK Met Office has said that wintry weather overnight will result in icy spots and settled snow in some parts of Northern Ireland, reports RTE.
In the UK, blizzard-like conditions may develop in areas of north-east England, where an amber snow warning is currently active.
Sleet and snowfall are forecast to continue along UK coastal regions overnight, with the most impacted areas likely to experience travel disruption and possible power outages, reports RTE.
