BREAKING: Ollie Horgan, esteemed League of Ireland manager, passes away at 57

The football community is in mourning following the passing of Ollie Horgan, the respected Galway United assistant manager and former Finn Harps boss, who died at the age of 57 after a battle with illness. Horgan, a Salthill native, leaves behind a remarkable legacy in Irish football, having made significant contributions to the sport over his extensive career.

Horgan was best known for his nine-year tenure as manager of Finn Harps, from 2013 to 2022, where he guided the club to the Premier Division twice, defying limited resources with his tactical acumen and relentless work ethic. Under his leadership, Finn Harps achieved memorable moments, including a dramatic promotion via the 2015 play-offs, sealed by BJ Banda’s iconic last-minute goal against Limerick. His ability to keep the club competitive on a modest budget earned him widespread admiration.

In 2022, Horgan joined Galway United as assistant manager under John Caulfield, playing a pivotal role in their First Division title win and subsequent return to the Premier Division. Despite a cancer diagnosis, he continued his work with unwavering dedication until stepping back in early July 2025. His departure from Galway United was announced just weeks ago, on August 9, with the club praising his “trademark energy, experience, and unwavering commitment.”

A former maths teacher at St. Eunan’s College in Letterkenny, Horgan was also an accomplished pianist with a passion for Bach and Beethoven. His multifaceted life touched many, from schoolchildren to football fans. He previously managed Fanad United to three Ulster Senior League titles and led the Republic of Ireland schoolboys’ team.

Tributes have poured in, with Dundalk FC calling him a “true pillar of the League of Ireland community.” Finn Harps and Galway United expressed profound sadness, highlighting his lasting impact. Horgan’s contributions to Irish football, marked by resilience and ingenuity, will be remembered for years to come.
