The meeting, which followed Trump’s recent summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, aimed to address critical issues, including territorial disputes and security guarantees for Ukraine.

The bilateral meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy began at 1:15 p.m. in the Oval Office, followed by a multilateral discussion with European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. The talks focused on securing NATO-style security protections for Ukraine and navigating Trump’s push for a swift peace deal, which includes controversial proposals for Ukraine to cede territory, such as parts of the Donbas region, and abandon NATO membership aspirations.
Zelenskyy emphasized the need for a united front against Russian aggression, stating on X that “Russia can only be forced into peace through strength,” and thanked Trump for his engagement. European leaders expressed concerns about concessions that could embolden Moscow, with Macron warning that weakness toward Russia risks future conflicts. The meeting, described as pivotal, comes after a contentious February 2025 Oval Office clash between Trump, Zelenskyy, and Vice President JD Vance, raising hopes among allies for a more constructive dialogue this time.
No press conference was scheduled, and the outcome remains uncertain as both sides navigate deep disagreements. Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities, including Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia, continued overnight, underscoring the urgency of the discussions.
