BREAKING: Russia declares Easter truce with Ukraine until Monday

Russia has announced a unilateral “Easter truce” in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine, suspending combat operations from 6:00 PM today, April 19, 2025, until midnight on April 21. The ceasefire coincides with Orthodox Easter on April 20, a major holiday for both Russians and Ukrainians. The Kremlin described the move as a “small gesture of goodwill,” accusing Ukraine of disregarding Christian values, according to posts circulating on X. However, Ukraine has not confirmed it will reciprocate, casting doubt on the truce’s effectiveness.

This is not the first attempt at an Easter ceasefire. In 2022, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy slammed Russia for rejecting a proposed truce, accusing Moscow of disrespecting Christian traditions as airstrikes intensified on Mariupol. That year, calls for a humanitarian pause from the United Nations and Pope Francis went unheeded. Similarly, in 2014, Ukraine’s efforts for an Easter truce in Donbas failed amid mutual distrust. These precedents fuel scepticism, with X users suggesting Russia’s move may be a publicity stunt or a strategic pause to regroup forces.

The announcement comes as the war, now in its third year, remains deadlocked. Heavy fighting continues in eastern Ukraine, with both sides suffering significant losses. The Kremlin’s framing of the truce as a moral gesture contrasts with its intensified military campaigns in recent months. Some analysts on X speculate Russia aims to deflect international criticism or appeal to domestic audiences ahead of Easter. Ukraine, meanwhile, has prioritised securing Western aid, with Zelenskyy recently warning of dwindling ammunition.

For civilians in war-torn areas, a truce could offer brief respite, but humanitarian groups remain cautious. Past ceasefires have often been marred by violations, leaving little hope for lasting peace. The international community, including NATO and the UN, has yet to comment formally. As Orthodox Easter approaches, all eyes are on whether this truce will hold or crumble like those before it, with the war’s devastating toll continuing to mount.
