BREAKING: Search in Co Cork for missing climber stood down after body recovered from the water

A search for a 27-yr-old Italian rock climber, a University College Cork student living in Blackpool, Cork city, was halted after divers recovered a body from Baltimore Harbour this morning.

The man went missing while climbing at Eastern Hole cliffs. His girlfriend reported him missing at 8:20pm yesterday after losing contact. Some of his climbing gear was found at the cliff top.

The Coast Guard’s Valentia Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre led the search, which began last night with Rescue 115 and 117 helicopters, Baltimore RNLI lifeboats, Toe Head Coast Guard, a Civil Defence drone team, and gardaí. The search paused at midnight and resumed at dawn. Divers found the body shortly after 9am, and it was brought ashore by a Baltimore lifeboat.

Gardaí have contacted the man’s family in Italy.
