BREAKING: Snooker legend John Virgo has sadly passed away aged 79

John Virgo, one of snooker’s most beloved figures, has passed away at the age of 79. The former professional player and iconic BBC commentator died on February 4, 2026, in Spain, where he had made his home.

Born in Salford on March 4, 1946, Virgo enjoyed an 18-year career on the baize, highlighted by his victory in the 1979 UK Championship, where he defeated Terry Griffiths. He also claimed titles such as the 1980 Bombay International and Pontins Professional, reaching the world’s top 10 and earning four ranking semi-final appearances.

After retiring from competition in 1994, Virgo became a household name through his warm, witty commentary for the BBC’s snooker coverage. His distinctive voice and catchphrases brought the sport to millions, while he co-presented the popular game show *Big Break* from 1991 to 2002. In 2023, he was inducted into the World Snooker Tour Hall of Fame.

Tributes have poured in from across the snooker world, with the World Snooker Tour describing him as a “legendary” player and broadcaster. Virgo is survived by his family, including children Gary and Brooke-Leah.
