A bill to legalise assisted death has cleared a legislative hurdle in the Dáil and is now under further consideration.
TDs voted 81-71 in favour of Dying with Dignity Bill, it will now enter the committee phase.
A motion by the government to establish a special committee to review the bill for 12 months was rejected.
The bill was sponsored by the Socialist Party TD Gino Kenny.
Cabinet ministers supported the government’s proposal, but all other TDs from the three coalition parties had a vote of conscience.
