Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to a proposal from US President Donald Trump for Russia and Ukraine to cease targeting each other’s energy infrastructure for 30 days. The Kremlin confirmed that Mr. Putin has issued orders to the Russian military to implement the agreement. According to RTÉ, this development is seen as a significant step toward de-escalating the conflict.
The White House announced that fresh ceasefire talks would begin “immediately.” The leaders discussed the ongoing Ukraine war during a phone call, which lasted over 90 minutes and began at 2pm Irish time. RTÉ reports that the conversation aimed to persuade Moscow to agree to a 30-day truce as a foundation for broader peace negotiations.
Kirill Dmitriev, Mr. Putin’s envoy for international cooperation, described the agreement as “historic.” Posting on X, he celebrated the progress, stating, “Under the leadership of President Putin and President Trump, the world has become a much safer place today! Historic! Epic!” Earlier, White House chief of staff Dan Scavino had commented that the call was “going well,” signaling optimism about the discussions.
