India has launched military strikes against Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, targeting nine alleged terrorist bases in a significant escalation of tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors. The operation, codenamed “Operation Sindoor,” was in retaliation for a deadly terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, which killed 26 people, including 25 tourists. India accuses Pakistan of backing the attack, a claim Islamabad denies.
The Indian military described the strikes, conducted in Kotli, Bahawalpur, and Muzaffarabad, as precise and focused, avoiding Pakistani military facilities. Pakistan confirmed the attacks, reporting three deaths and 12 injuries, and vowed a “befitting response.” No Indian aircraft entered Pakistani airspace, indicating the use of missiles or drones.
The international community, including the UN, US, and China, has called for restraint, while Iran’s foreign minister offered to mediate. Major airlines, including Lufthansa and Emirates, are rerouting flights to avoid Pakistani airspace. Both nations are on edge, with India holding civil defence drills and Pakistan conducting missile tests.
The strikes, the first direct confrontation since 2019, underscore the volatility of the Kashmir dispute. As fears of further escalation grow, the world watches closely for signs of de-escalation or dialogue.
