Breakthrough: For the first time ever, scientists have cured living animals of HIV

US scientists have managed to completely cure living animals of HIV using controversial CRISPR gene-editing, a new study claims.

The virus has been uncurably because of its ability to hide away in latent reservoirs. However new research claims that US scientists showed they could completely remove HIV DNA from human cells implanted into mice – which could stop a recurrance of HIV.

It’s the very first time in history that such a test has proved successful – paving the way to a human clinical trial.

The study was conductedat the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and the University of Pittsburgh, and involved a humanized model in which mice were transplanted with human immune cells and infected with the virus.

According to medical experts, the next goal is to get human trials underway.
