The gardai have had their reputation pounded by politicians and members of the public over their exaggerated ‘official’ figures they released.
However a story that has emerged from the weekend has gone viral on social media.
According to Dublin barman, Philip Brogan, he saw two men attack another man, who turned out to be a tourist, and beat him unconcious around 4:30am on Sunday morning.
The young man ran over to help the beaten man and said he saw a squad car nearby but was shocked to hear that the officers in the car told him to “Ring the garda station to get the guards”.
Philip was talking to the Irish Mirror and told them:
“I was on Dame Street and this chap got knocked out by these two lads. He fell straight to the ground, he didn’t get back up and he was unconscious. I went over to make sure he was OK and so did a lot of other people. He wasn’t waking up.”
“And along comes the patrol car down Dame Street and it was just cruising along, no flashing lights, and there were three people in the car.”
He continued:
“The guys in the front seats were definitely gardaÃ. They said, ‘Listen you need to ring the garda station to get the guards. I said, ‘The guys’s unconscious, he’s after being attacked’. And they said, ‘No, you need to ring the Garda station’.”
“”There were witnesses to what happened, easily a dozen on the street who had seen it, people in the shop had seen it and I noticed it from all the way across the road. The streets were packed at that hour.”
He rang Pearce St Station and an ambulance, which came around 10 minutes later.
Philip told the Mirror that he was fuming at the thoughts of the gaurds in the squad car doing nothing. So far the gardai haven’t commented on the case.
