At least 26 people have lost their lives after explosive devices were detonated in Brussels airport and a metro station downtown. Dozens more were injured, many of them critically.

It is understood that shots were also fired at these locations as people fled in panic.

The explosions at the airport caused parts of the departure hall ceiling to collapse, causing injury. Armed police helped with the evacuation.

A suspected suicide bomber detonated another device inside Maalbeek metro station, in central Brussels, about an hour later.

The city of Brussels has been under high alert for the last four days, after the chief suspect in the deadly Paris attacks that left 130 people dead last year was arrested.

Two hundred extra troops have now been deployed around the capital to try and maintain security.
