Burning cars and tear gas: 22 arrested as police clash with protesters in Paris

A protest march of thousands of people against the French government’s security bill in Paris ended in chaos when groups of “rioters” set cars on fire, smashed windows and stormed police who responded with tear gas.

Thousands of demonstrators left the Porte des Lilas in the far northeast of the French capital on Saturday and headed for the Place de la République in the city centre. Protesters sought to express their dissatisfaction with police violence and President Emmanuel Macron’s security policy plans.

The demonstrators held up banners reading: “France, land of police rights” and “Withdrawal of the security law.”

The march turned into violence almost immediately, when groups of protesters dressed in black with their faces covered began smashing windows and burning cars. Soon the streets of eastern Paris were plunged into chaos as protesters erected barricades and set them on fire.
