It’s beginning to get increasingly messy in terms of just what is and isn’t allowed in public or on public transport.
Both bus and train unions have said that their members are frontline workers and that they do not want a confrontation with members of the public.
Members of the National Bus and Rail Union will not enforce face mask rules, according to union representatives.
Face masks on public transport became mandatory today. Those caught not wearing one might face a fine of up to €2,500 or a six-month prison sentence.
Unions say that it’s not the drivers’ job to enforce Government-issued guidelines.
