According to reports today, it is expected that the cabinet will approve a motion early next week that will see 10,000 disabled children in receipt of the domiciliary care allowance being given a free medical cards.
It is understood the Minister for Health Simon Harris will submit a report outlining the cost of the scheme before the Dáil on Tuesday.
The Department of Health say the €10m per annum scheme will provide medical cards for an extra 10,000 children in receipt of the allowance as they were refused a card due to a number of reasons.
The department also say all children, irrespective of the severity of their condition who are currently in receipt of the domiciliary care allowance will be entitled a medical card.
