Calls for major action after violent street fights and incidents in Galway

Galway Mayor Eddie Hoyer has condemned the spate of violent incidents in the city in recent days and said urgent action is needed to tackle the problem, reports RTE.

Mr Hoare was speaking after a series of attacks in the city center over the weekend.

Four people were taken to hospital after a major disturbance in a Galway shopping centre last night when a car sped through a crowd of people.

The incident happened at around 6pm in the parking lot of a shopping centre on Headford Road.

As with other attacks in Galway over the weekend, footage of the public riot was widely shared on social media, reports RTE.

A large group was involved in the action and the event was observed by a significant number of spectators.

Some rioters are repeatedly hitting cars with sticks or pipes.

Not far away – near the mall – groups of people can be seen joking and fighting with each other.

While this was happening, a black Ford Focus drove into the crowd, hitting several people before the vehicle returned to the main road.

Two people suffered non-life-threatening injuries after being hit by a car.

Two others are understood to have been treated for suspected stab wounds.

No one has been arrested at this stage.

GardaĆ are believed to have seized a number of weapons used in the incident. Two vehicles were also secured for technical testing, reports RTE.

The incident is believed to be due to an ongoing dispute between several families in the area.

The dispute led to another series of attacks in Galway city centre on Friday afternoon when several men were involved in a fight in Williamsgate Street just after 3pm.

The mobile phone recording of the incident has been re-posted online.

Gardai arrested five people at the scene.

The men – aged in their teens and 40s – were charged before a special session of Galway District Court on Friday evening and Saturday morning, reports RTE.
