Calls for the Dáil to be recalled in aftermath of Storm Éowyn – but they’re on two weeks holidays

Mary Lou McDonald, the leader of Sinn Féin, has written to the Taoiseach, pleading with him to call a new meeting of the Dáil right away in order to discuss the nation’s predicament following Storm Éowyn, reports RTE.

According to Ms. McDonald, a lot of individuals are experiencing severe life disruptions and a really difficult period.

She went on to say that hundreds of thousands of people are without water and power and might experience additional days without supplies, reports RTE.

Following the formation of the new government, the Dáil was postponed on January 23. The next meeting is scheduled on February 5th.

She stated that TDs must now be given the chance to bring up these concerns with the Government in the Dáil, reports RTE.

Aontú and the Social Democrats have also demanded that the Dáil be summoned back to review the storm’s destruction and to lay out measures for bringing water and electricity back to those without it.

Cian O’Callaghan, the deputy leader of the Social Democrats, said it is absurd that the Dáil has no preparations to convene during this crisis, reports RTE.

Michael Collins, the leader of Independent Ireland, also demanded that the Dáil meet again right once to discuss the growing situation brought on by Storm Éowyn.

“While half the country grapples with the devastating effects of Storm Éowyn, the government has chosen to take an extended holiday. This inaction is making a mockery of the new administration and leaving our citizens to fend for themselves,” he said, reports RTE.

“This review should involve all stakeholders to see what steps can be taken to minimise disruption when we encounter similar events in the future,” Mr Gorman concluded, reports RTE.
