Campaign group calls on the Government to regulate rent prices as landlords in Dublin seek to increase prices by 40%

There are strong calls this morning by a tenants and housing campaign group who are urging the Government to intervene and halt the spiraling cost of renting a home in Dublin.

The call comes after it was revealed that landlords are looking to increase rent prices on properties across the capital by 40%.

It is understood the Secure Rents campaign is calling on the Minister for Housing Simon Coveney to regulate the price market, and stop landlord’s from unlawfully evicting tenants whilst selling their properties.

According to Patrick Bresnihan, of the Dublin Tenants’Association, the launch of the campaign is highly “necessary and important” as tenants across the capital are being forced to pay extremely high rent even though they cannot afford a home of their own.

Mr Bresnihan also said a number of people had contacted him and the group for help after landlords sought to increase rent prices by 40%.

Mr Bresnihan added: “It turns out there is not much they can do about it with how things are at the moment. There’s a level of fear and anxiety you can see on people’s faces.”
