Campaigners and survivors call for a fresh inquest into the Stardust nightclub tragedy, after claims of new evidence about what really happened on the fateful night

A number of campaigners and survivors of the Stardust tragedy have called for a fresh inquest into the fire that claimed the lives of 48 people thirty-eight years ago.

According to campaigners, new evidence has become available about faulty electrical wiring issues that had allegedly been made known to the nightclub’s owners in the weeks leading to the night of the fire. Also, only one emergency call was supposedly placed on the night, but a new witness now says that she made a second call from the roof of the Stardust. Also, it is claimed that emergency exits were chained up. Despite these claims, no one has ever been prosecuted in relation to the incident.

The Stardust fire became Ireland’s worst civil tragedy, and though the original ruling declared that the fire was due to arson, families of the deceased never accepted it.
