Canada tries to get to grips with Strikes Tumbler Ridge deadly school shooting

On February 10th, the small, remote community of Tumbler Ridge in northeastern British Columbia was shattered by a mass shooting that ranks among the deadliest in Canadian history. The violence unfolded at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a nearby residence, leaving nine people dead and at least 25 others injured.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) received the first emergency call around 1:20 p.m. local time reporting an active shooter at the school. Officers arrived to find multiple victims inside the building. Six people were pronounced dead at the scene, with another dying en route to hospital. Two additional bodies were later discovered at a private home in the town.

The suspected shooter, described in initial alerts as a female wearing a dress, was found deceased inside the school from what authorities believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police have identified the individual but have not yet released the name publicly, citing the ongoing investigation. No motive has been determined, and officials acknowledge it may prove difficult to establish one.

Tumbler Ridge, a former coal-mining town of roughly 2,400 residents, remains in deep shock. Flags fly at half-mast across British Columbia as messages of condolence pour in. Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed national grief, stating, “The nation mourns with you,” while Premier David Eby described the event as heartbreaking for the close-knit community.

This rare outbreak of gun violence in Canada has renewed discussions about public safety in rural areas, even as the country continues to grapple with the aftermath of an unimaginable tragedy.
