Police in the US have started an investigation after reported death threats made against Walter Palmer, the dentist accused of killing the iconic Cecil the Lion in Zimbabwe.

Security has been stepped up around Palmer’s dental practice in Bloomington after demonstrations were staged outside the premises. Protestors held banners saying “Let the hunter be hunted!”, left stuffed toys at the door, and an artist painted a portrait of Cecil the Lion in the car park.

Mr. Palmer reportedly paid almost $50,000 to kill the lion during a hunting trip to Zimbabwe. The animal was then skinned and beheaded. Two Zimbabwean men have now appeared in court under charges of poaching.
