Cheap flights will become a thing of the past as Eamon Ryan says he and the EU are working to make sure they aren’t the norm

Cheap flights abroad will more than likely become a thing of the past in the near future as the Minister for Transport and the Environment Eamon Ryan says he and the European Union are working to make sure they aren’t the norm.

Speaking to RTE’s Claire Byrne, Ryan said that cheap flights to continent won’t be easily accessible within the next 15 years as Ireland and other countries within the EU are working to significantly cut its emissions as part of their climate action plans.

Although Ryan did admit that flights to top destinations will happen, he did say people wishing to avail of such flights from as little as €10 won’t have as much opportunity to do so.

The Transport Minister stated that meetings with fellow Eurpean Councial officials have already taken place and we are looking at a number of measures that will look to regulate such cheap flight services.

Ryan stated that any potential regulations wouldn’t just be on a national level, but rather on a European level as they require cooperation.

He added that such a change would form part of Ireland’s plans to reach zero carbon emissions by 2050.
