A batch of chemotherapy products made by Fannin Compounding in Dublin have been recalled, after the discovery of pollutants in one of its manufacturing machines.
The contaminant found is a bacteria which may cause serious, and potentialy fatal, non- gastrointestinal-tract infections.
Patients with a weakened immune system, newborn babies, and patients who have undergone surgery and have wound infections would be most at risk, and it is unclear at this point how many patients may have been affected by the product.
The machine in question has now been temporarily disabled, pending an investigation to find out how the contamination occurred.
