Chinese government official suggests coronavirus may have been a US plot against China gone wrong

A Chinese government official has suggested that the US Army might have “brought the epidemic (Covid-19 virus) to Wuhan”.

Zhao Lijian, a spokesman for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, mad the floated the conspiracy after Robert Redfield, the director of the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, acknowledged that some Americans who were said to have died from influenza may have actually died from the Covid-19 virus.

Lijian wrote on Twitter:
“When did patient zero begin in US? How many people are infected? What are the names of the hospitals? It might be US Army who brought the epidemic to Wuhan. Be transparent! Make public your data! US owe us an explanation!”

As with all major world events, the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus has led to wild speculation online and conspiracy theories ranging from it being an accidentally leaked Chinese bio-weapon developed in in a lab in Wuhan which to it being a US attack on China that went wildly out of control.

Others have linked it to the mysterious Georgia Guidestones and claim it is a global depopulation programme.

This case however, is the first time one of these conspiracy theories appears to have at least tacit state backing as it is highly unlikely a Chinese government official would make such a public accusation with the sanction of the countries controlling dictatorship.
