The price of twenty cigarettes is now officially €11 after the Government agreed to introduce a 50 cent last night.
The price increase which was announced yesterday’s Budget faced late opposition after Sinn Féin and the triple-A-PBP opposed the measure.
However the Bill was passed through the Dáil late last night as there was no formal vote called. It is believed both party opposed the increase claiming the public will further turn to the black market to purchase cigarettes illegally.
