Local government in the Italian city of Venice has passed legislation effectively banning the docking of cruise liners in its historic center.
The move comes after more than ten years of complaints by residents about passenger ships cruising along the city’s waterways and dwarfing all the structures around them.
Large ships will be redirected to the Fusina and Lombardia terminals, which are located on the far side of the lagoon and away from the city’s historic center, from September.
Locals in Venice have long complained that large cruise ships constantly flood the city’s narrow passageways with tourists, creating difficult living conditions.
