A homecoming celebration  will take place on O’Connell Street in Dublin tonight to celebrate the All-Ireland winning Dublin senior football team.

Dublin lifted their 25th All-Ireland crown following a 0-12 to 0-09 victory over Kerry at Croke Park yesterday.

The event starts at 7.15pm and will be held on a stage just south of the Spire. People are expected to begin arriving from 6pm onwards.

Diversions will be in place in the city and Gardaí are advising fans to access the event from O’Connell Bridge, from the west via Middle Abbey Street, and from the east via Lower Abbey Street.

There will be no public access to the area from O’Connell Street Upper, or from any of the other side streets off O’Connell Street, from 6pm this evening, effectively shutting off O’Connell St and turning it into a large venue.

Dublin City Council, which is organising the event, is urging people to use public transport to travel into the city centre due to the heavy traffic, lack of parking and multiple diversions which may make it difficult to access the event via personal vehicle.

The local authorities state that it will be an alcohol-free and family-friendly event.

The event will be hosted by Lord Mayor Críona Ní Dhálaigh. Who stated that; “From about six o’clock we’re hoping that people will start coming into town, the homecoming event will be in O’Connell street down at the Spire and the entrances are via O’Connell street from O’Connell bridge, middle Abbey street and lower Abbey Street.

“We’re asking people to come early and come prepared for the weather and hopefully it is a family friendly, alcohol free event.”

“I really hope everybody will enjoy themselves but I also encourage all Dubs to come and show their support and appreciation to the Dublin team for the great win yesterday.”
