After an unusually mild Halloween, where temperatures reached up to 19.4C in places, winter seems to have finally taken hold in the country.

In contrast to the balmy Halloween just gone, the thermometer dropped to about 1C last night in certain areas. And according to Met Eireann, the trend is for chilly conditions to prevail for the near future.

Showers are forecast for today, some of them could contain hail. It will be drier and brighter tomorrow, Wednesday, but wet conditions are set to hit the country on Wednesday night and persist for much of Thursday and Friday.

Temperatures will range between 8C and 14C from today and into the weekend.

Some long range forecast is predicting the looming winter to be one of the coldest on record yet.
