Committee calls for the introduction of generic uniforms in order to cut spiralling school costs

An education committee has told the Oireachtas that schools should introduce generic uniforms and gym equipment in other to cut inflated costs on parents.

In a report submitted before the Oireachtas, the committee also called on Government to provide an €20 million to the back to school book rental scheme.

The report states that on average parents spend between €360 and €765 on school costs for children between high infant and first year secondary school students each year.

It is understood that a high number of parents have said that they have struggled to cover their child’s school costs each year, with many stating that the cost of crested uniforms and high book rental schemes being the most challenging each year.

Although the report did state that some schools have moved to remove crested uniforms, many across the country have failed to do so.
