Common sense? Common charger legislation has come into effect across the EU

The European Union has implemented new regulations that provide a standard charging port for cell phones and other electronic gadgets, reports RTE.

All mobile phones and electronic gadgets, including digital cameras, headphones, and portable video game consoles, are required by law to include USB-C charging ports.

The regulation eliminates the need for several, disparate device chargers. Customers may now use any USB-C charger to charge their gadgets, reports RTE.

The European Commission estimated at the time that the change would save consumers around €250 million, and the European Parliament adopted the revised regulations in 2022.

Additionally, while utilising suitable chargers, the directive will guarantee that charging speeds are consistent, reports RTE.

When a consumer buys a product, they will also be given the information they need about charging performance.

The ‘Common Charger Directive’ won’t, however, apply to computers until April 28, 2026.

According to the Department of the Environment, Climate, and Communications, the purpose of the postponed laptop implementation is to allow laptop manufacturers the necessary time to develop and switch to the single charging system, reports RTE.

According to a department official, the new regulations would lessen the environmental impact of charger manufacturing and disposal.

According to Ossian Smyth, Minister of State for Communications and the Circular Economy, the regulation would increase “convenience” for customers in the EU and Ireland.

“This reduction in unnecessary charger purchases will also lead to an estimated 980-tonne reduction in electronic waste in the EU per year, which is in keeping with Ireland’s goals of moving to a circular economy,” reports RTE.
