The dog, believed to be an XL Bully breed, was put down by a veterinarian at the scene, reports RTE.

It is understood that the animal was a family pet belonging to the household where the attack happened.

Dogs of restricted breeds must comply with stringent legal requirements. Owners of these breeds are obliged to adhere to extra regulations for public safety, including muzzling their dogs when in public areas, reports RTE.

Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council Ken Murnane said his thoughts and the thoughts of everyone in Carlow are with the woman and her family.

He said that the tragic nature of the incident has shocked not just the local community but the entire country, reports RTE.
