Company gets fined €75,000 after worker loses his hand at concrete block plant




The company was fined €75,000 for violating health and safety rules after an employee cut off his arm, according to the state’s workplace safety watchdog.

Gleeson Concrete Limited, based in Donohill, County Tipperary, has pleaded guilty to an offence under the Workplace Safety, Health and Welfare Act 2005 for failing to manage and conduct operations in a manner that ensures the safety of workers, reports Breaking News.

Judge Eugene O’Kelly fined the company €75,000 at Waterford County Court on Friday.

The prosecution is investigating an incident on March 31, 2021 at a concrete block plant in Donohill, reports Breaking News.

A company employee was seriously injured when his right arm was amputated while removing a cement blockage from an auger.

Assistant chief executive of the Health and Safety Authority Mark Cullen said: “Certain work activities will involve hazards that may have significant higher level of risks, risks that give rise to the potential of serious personal injury if not identified and managed appropriately. It is essential that employers manage and conduct the work activities being carried out at the place of work to ensure the safety, health and welfare of all employees.” reports Breaking News.
