The true decrepitude of the Irish health system is once again making headlines, as a number of consultants have raised serious concerns about the state of the mortuary inside Waterford Hospital.
In a letter sent to the South-South West Hospital Group in Cork last October, the consultants make reference to horrific conditions at the facility, speaking of ‘bodies decomposing on trolleys due to lack of proper refrigeration’ and ‘spillages of bodily fluids from the dead.’
The letter, which was first reported by the Waterford News & Star newspaper and brought to light now by RTE, claims that these Dantesque conditions create serious health hazards for staff, not to mention the moral issues in relation to the deceased and their families.
Consultants say that while planning for a new mortuary at the location had been announced as far back as 2013, nothing has actually been done.
