Controversial fracking exploration halted in England due to fears of earthquakes

The UK government has stopped all shale gas extraction – commonly known as fracking – in England amid fears about earthquakes.

The moves comes after a report by the Oil and Gas Authority which said that it wasn’t possible to predict the probability or size of tremors caused by the fracking.

Fracking has been suspended since a tremor in Lancashire in August but was due to resume in Spring 2020.

The UK gov Andrea Leadsom said shale gas had huge potential but the government was no longer convinced it could be extracted safely.
