Cork woman hailed as a hero after she bravely rescued a three year old toddler from the River Lee

A woman has been hailed as a hero by the public and Fire service officials in Cork City after she rescued a three-year-old girl from the River Lee.

The woman named Maria Foley has been praised for her quick thinking and brave actions after she dived into the river to save the toddler, after she fell under the railings at Patrick’s Quay in the city centre near Brian Boru bridge.

Maria from Cobh, aged is in her 30s, did nit hesitate when she saw the whole incident unfold and quickly leaped into the water to rescue the distressed child. It is believed Ms Foley then held the child above water until the Fire and Ambulance services arrived at the scene.

Meanwhile an official from the Cork fire service said Ms Foley’s actions were “extremely brave”. “Being low tide, it was about a five metre (16.4ft) drop into the water,” said the official. “This is outstanding act of heroism on her part.”

It is understood that both Maria and the toddler were taken to University Hospital Cork shortly after midday, both are thought to be fine after the terrifying incident.
