Coronavirus: Army on standby in preparation for a possible escalation of lockdown measures

Social media users have been posting since last yesterday about a so-called “shutdown” of the country with speculation adding to the increasing sense of panic amongst the public.

The rumours centre around Defence Forces preparation for a “total shutdown” of the country next week and supposed leaked information that the spread of the Covid-19 virus is far worse than is being publicly admitted too.

Following Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s announcement of unprecedented measures to slow the spread of the Covid-19 virus on Thursday, panic buying at supermarkets erupted across much of the country, but both the government and suppliers have assured people that this is not necessary.

The Taoiseach has not said anything about a complete shutdown, only that the Defence Forces stand ready should they need to be called in by civil authorities to help with management of the lockdown measures imposed.
