Coronavirus: Disaster in Italy as death toll surpasses China’s, where the Covid-19 virus was first detected

The death toll as a result of the coronavirus in Italy has risen to over 3,400, finally surpassing China’s.

Italy has a large percentage of elderly population, which is considered a factor in such a disproportionate death toll.

Authorities have confirmed that the total number of Covid-19 deaths has risen 627 to 4,032 in the past 24 hours.

The number of deaths is single biggest rise in 24 hours and the total number of cases in the country has now risen to 47,021.

The latest figures now means that Italy has surpassed China for the total number of deaths related to Covid-19.

The official number of infections in Italy is now 41,305, but health authorities believe that number to be far higher as testing is largely reduced to people who present themselves in hospital.
