Coronavirus: German zoo faces the grim prospect of having to sacrifice some animals to feed others, as cash runs low

A German zoo is facing the grim prospect of having to sacrifice some animals to feed others, as the zoo’s cash reserves run low.

Neumunster Zoo, located in the eponymous German town about 70km north of Hamburg, has announced that the forced closure due to the coronavirus pandemic has meant no income for some weeks.

But zoo authorities highlighted that animals still need to be fed no matter what, and staff at the facility have reportedly drawn a list of which animals to euthanise first to feed others, if it comes to it.

Zoos across Germany are asking the German Government for an urgent €100 million bailout, warning that situations like this will soon arise at other parks.
