Coronavirus: Medical trial of antiviral drug hoped to work in the treatment of Covid-19 halted due to “disappointing” results

A medical trial of an antiviral drug hoped to work in the treatment of Covid-19 has been halted due to “disappointing” results.

The scientific community had pinned a great deal of hope in the effectiveness of antiviral compound remdesivir, developed by US pharma company Gilead, after encouraging results in early research.

A China-based trial involving 237 people, however, had to be halted due to the drug’s apparent inefficiency to treat Covid-19. Also, the medication reportedly caused severe side effects in 18 people, leading to the immediate termination of the trial.

Gilead had originally developed remdesivir to treat Ebola, but the drug was never approved.
